Articles

  • A Conversation with ReadySoft About "AMAX"

Games

  • Amazing: A program that lets you create, store, and solve mazes using 3-D graphics.

Utilities

  • EW Exploding Windows (Version 1.4):
An extension to the Workbench menu strip, allowing users to run tools via menu selection.
  • NewZAP:
A multi-purpose file sector editing utility for altering bytes within a file, examining binary and ASCII representations, or searching for key sequences of digits or characters.
    • Features precise position-oriented object modifications.
    • Runs from CLI or Workbench under KickStart 1.1 or 1.2, with or without FAST RAM.
  • SYSCHECK:
Scans your system libraries and verifies each file against its list of 96 items to determine:
    • If it is present and up-to-date (Yay!).
    • If it is missing (OK, if that's intended).
    • If it is outdated (look out!).

A Message From The Editor:

Welcome to the special Christmas issue of Amy Today. I have
chosen to write one big magazine to take the place of issues 6-2
and 6-3. Because of this, the issue is coming out on the 25th of
the month rather than the 20th. This is by far the biggest issue
I have ever published. (17 pages plus an index!)

I have now published 18 issues of Amy Today and have successfully
lost about $50 for my efforts. If you can find someone who would
like to place an inexpensive advertisement, please let me know.
Heck, you can buy yourself an ad and start your own picture trade
or something fun like that. (I've gotten about 50 responses from
the trade...that would be GREAT response for a business!)

Have fun reading the articles in this issue. There is something
for everyone--hard drives, games, interviews, and more. Have fun
and have a joyous Christmas and a great New Year!

           John Rydell
            (Editor)

Distributing "Amy Today":

Amy Today is file-based magazine which has been copyrighted by
John Rydell. I am allowing everyone to freely distribute it as
long as they give credit to Amy Today for anything taken from the
magazine. I also request that the magazine, itself, remains "AS
IS" when being distributed. Please do not modify it in any way
if you are going to distribute it.

About Distributing: Please upload Amy Today EVERYWHERE! This
magazine simply will not flourish if it is not uploaded whenever
possible. Every issue is kept near 15,000 bytes ARCed so that
upload/download time should never be a problem. So, please, if
you have the chance spread the magazine around the country! Give
a copy to your friend! Keep Amy Today alive and going strong!

modeling programs. It is designed to support Sculpt 3D, Video
Scape 3D, TurboSilver, and Forms in Flight. Interfont retails
for $119.95 and users can upgrade from Interchange for $79.95.

723 East Skinner, Wichita, KS 67211 phone (316)267-0202. CLtd
also maintains their own 24 hour BBS. Call (316)267-1222.

*Software Etc-
Software ETC. in B. Dalton bookstores have recently started
carrying Amiga software again. This time, however, they are
carrying newer up-to-date titles usually at a 10% discount off of
list price. If you were a regular customer of Software Etc., you
recently got a holiday 1988 catalog. In it are discount coupons
for use in December and January. If you did not get one, just
ask for one because you can get an ADDITIONAL 20% off the regular
price of any one item in the store between now and December 24,
1988. <>

*Amiga Package-
There is another Amiga 500 package deal available. For $1,229
from CMO you can get The Amiga 500, 1084S Stereo Monitor, and
$500.00 (retail) software package including Money Mentor, Ferrari
Formula 1, TV Text, Graphic Studio, and Textcraft AND a FREE

available. It includes the 2000, 1084 monitor, Aegis "Video
Titler", Aegis "Video Scape 3D", EA's Deluxe Video V1.2 for

Mail Order.)

*Dos2Dos Update-
Central Coast Software has recently released an upgrade to its
Dos 2 Dos disk utility software, which allows the reading,
writing, and formatting of MS-DOS and Atari ST (Gem) disks. The
current version now supports MS-DOS partitions on hard-disks
networked with Amiga's either through LANs (local area networks)
or through SCSI devices. There is also new support for lower
case filenames and wildcard copying to and from the MS-DOS disk.
To upgrade, sent $15.00 plus your original disk to Central Coast
Software.

The following is a list of some of the newest titles that have
been released this year. Some of were actually released a while
back, but, none-the-less, they are fairly new:

<>

-GOMF Button is an extension of the popular GOMF "Get Outta My
Face" software program. GOMF helps recover from GURUs rather
than crash. With the button you can now save the data even after
a crash. List Price $69.95 from Hyptertek/Silicon Springs.

-Pc-Elevator 386 is an MS_DOS accelerator card that is compatible

-LazerXpress is the new laser printer from CLtd. This unit comes

Dragon's Lair Review:
(Howard Owen)

Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair is distributed by ReadySoft and retails
for $59.95.

I always thought that the arcade version of Dragon's Lair was a
waste of money. It had something to do with the arbitrary nature
of the puzzles. Why pour quarters into a machine simply to
figure out which way to pull the joystick or when to push the
fire button? Besides, the real appeal of the game was the
graphics, and finding out what came next, both of which you could
get watching some puerile youth feed the game with his parent's
hard earned copper-nickel alloy. It therefore came as quite a
surprise to hear an irresistible siren's song emanating from a
copy of "Don Bluth Dragon's Lair" on the shelf of my local
Software Etc. store. "I have insanely great graaaphics" sang the
software. "Quiet!" I retorted, "You take over the machine and
won't work with my hard disk. " "I have a hi-res mode that will
knock your sooocks off" sang the software. "Get thee behind me!"
I commanded, "You are too expensive. " I'm discounted a whole
entire 5 perceeent" sang the software. "I'll take it!" I said in
abject surrender. So what if I hadn't got any Christmas shopping
in?

Getting the game home, I proceeded to open the package. Dragon's
Lair comes on six floppy disks, accompanied by a little two page
instruction sheet. The cover of the package states "For the
Amiga A500/A2000 with 1 Mb, A1000 with 512K. " This rather
peculiar requirement arises from the fact that the game uses the
256K of "writable control store" or kickstart RAM in the Amiga
1000. Using this memory allows the game to run on a stock Amiga
1000. This is only possible because the game ignores the Amiga's
own operating system; otherwise it would need the routines stored
in the WCS. In addition, the game does not use Amiga DOS, but
instead relies on a custom loader written by the developers. Why
they bypassed the Amiga's multitasking operating system is a
matter of speculation. On the one hand, they probably gained a
great deal of speed loading animation data from the floppy
drives. On the other hand, copy protection is a lot easier when
you trash the host computer's operating system. Going directly
to the hardware has other consequences, as we shall see.

Starting up Dragon's Lair is simple: put disk one in DF0: and
boot away. The instructions state that "The game will recognize
as many disks as are connected. " I was a little worried that
this would not apply to the external floppy on my A2000.
AmigaDOS configures this drive as DF2:. Since I don't have an
internal DF1:, I thought this might give Dragon's Lair some
problems. Fortunately though, the game had no problem with my
configuration. Perhaps that is one slight benefit of dropping
the supplied DOS in favor of a custom loader. However, one big
drawback to doing that is the impossibility of loading the game
on a hard disk. Readysoft says they "support" the Comspec SCSI
controller and drive, but you need to give the game a dedicated
partition of ten megs! This requires reformatting the disk to
load the game. Not my idea of support! The custom loader is
quite fast, although I can't help wondering how much faster the
game might load from my hard drive with the fast file system.
Yes, I know most people have only floppies, but if they hadn't
ignored Amiga DOS, then everyone could have been happy, including
hard disk owners.

In any event, it wasn't long before I was watching Dirk the
Daring glance suspiciously to his right and left. As he turned
to stride purposefully toward the castle gate, I was feeling a
trifle overwhelmed. There were too many astonishing elements in
the scene that was unfolding in front of my eyes. The animation
was smooth and realistic. The scene appeared crisp, with a
minimum of "jaggies." The image filled the entire screen from
top to bottom. This game was done in overscan! Pressing the "H"
key yielded another surprise. The digital soundtrack fell
silent, and the screen shrank to about a quarter of its original
size. in this smaller area, an image sharper and clearer than
any I had ever seen on my Amiga before appeared! A bare trace of
flicker betrayed the use of interlace in the ultra high
resolution display. I sat back and cheered! As a result, I was
eaten by the slimy monster at the bottom of the castle's moat. A
trivial price to pay for the privilege of seeing the opening
sequence!

After getting over my initial astonishment at the sheer technical
artistry of Dragon's Lair, I settled in to enjoy the game. As in
the original version, the controls are simple. The four
"cardinal" directions on the joystick, and the fire button are
the only options for control. The key to the game is knowing
WHEN to push the appropriate widget. Since I hadn't given in to
the urge to fill the arcade version with quarters, I never
memorized the sequences needed to get through the various
screens. This left me in a neophyte adventurer's position with
regard to the Amiga version. I found that at first, the wait for
disk loading was tolerable. As I progressed beyond the first few
screens, however, I found myself becoming more and more impatient
for the next scene (which I had seen before) to load. Another
feature which I sorely missed was a pause button. I KNOW it
wasn't present in the arcade version, but this is HOME computer
software. Come on, guys! Other than that, I found myself
experiencing a profound sense of deja vu. Although the game is
supposed to contain a few differences from the arcade version, it
IS Dragon's Lair, digitized frame-by-frame from the original. It
has all the strengths, and all the weaknesses of the arcade
version. If (like me) you were annoyed by the shallow and
arbitrary nature of the puzzles in the original, so will you be
with the Amiga version. If you were blown away by the graphics
and smooth animation in the arcade, you will be equally
astonished when you see the same graphics on your Amiga's
screen.

The game behaves anti-socially by seizing control of the machine.
The Amiga's operating system is designed to allow very low-level
access to the custom chips while at the same time providing for
multitasking and sharing of the machine. This approach is
unfamiliar to many game designers who are used to working on
8-bit machines. They tend to ignore the operating system,
justifying their behavior by saying it is necessary in order to
squeeze the last drop of performance out of the hardware. This
argument had more force when the machine in question was a C-64.
By contrast, the Amiga is a far more powerful system, and such
measures are less justifiable. Having said all that, I must
admit it is barely possible that Dragon's Lair may represent an
exception to the rule. The game does some astonishing things.
It's impossible for me to say with absolute certainty that
Dragon's Lair would have been possible without ignoring the
operating system. All I can say for sure is I WISH it were
possible!

In conclusion, I give Dragon's Lair a ten out of ten for artistry
and technical excellence, and a five out of ten for game play.
If you can live with the lack of multi-tasking and hard disk
support, I'd say it belongs in your software library, if only to
show your less fortunate computer brethren what they are missing!

Arkanoid Update
(John Shortle)

Discovery Software recently updated their arcade hit Arkanoid.
The new version is identical in game play to the original. The
only difference is the addition of thirty-three new levels
(sixty-six total). Players must select which set of levels they
wish to play (the new set or the old set). Like the original, a
player may start on any level from one to twenty. The new level
thirty-three (the final level) is the same as the old. The new
levels have an entirely new set of background graphics, some of
which look very nice. I feel that the new levels are slightly
more thought out than the original. Some of the original levels
require too much luck to complete. Finally, Discovery has
lowered the retail price of Arkanoid from $39.95 to $29.95.

Sheldon Leemon Speaks, Part II:
(Bob Riemersma)

<>

Now we resume after he has covered his own background with the
Amiga product line, then gone over what he knew of the computers
to date. Here he went on about future, starting with AmigaDOS
1.4...

Sheldon talked about the recent philosophy at Commodore that is
hushing up development efforts, since people get impatient
waiting for things. The presence of ex-IBM people at Commodore
should be taken as a good sign, since they are more marketing-
oriented than Commodore people have been in the past. Sheldon
feels that rumors should simply be taken as encouragement that
the Amiga is still being supported by Commodore.

While Commodore had been telling developers that 1.4 would be
done by the end of 1988, this should be discounted based upon
past performance. 1.4 is geared to support some of the new
things they are doing. The custom chip set has been both a
blessing and a curse. Hardware and software has been advancing
to the point that the Amiga is being passed by, so new chips or
alternatives may be expected in the future.

An example of the tricks they can do with the Amiga custom chips
is the A2024 high-resolution monitor and supporting software.
The A2024 cuts down the refresh-rate, and sends four "screenfuls"
of information at the current frame-rate for each actual screen
displayed. The four images are buffered, or stored, in the
A2024's screen buffer in a "2 by 2 screen" pattern for display as
a single high-res image that is 1280 by 800 pixels updated one
fourth as often. In actuality the image is only 1008 pixels wide
which is better suited to the Amiga hardware and software. Lousy
for animations purposes, but fantastic for CAD, desktop
publishing, and similar applications.

Future developments include the "really fat" or "obese" Agnus
chip that will replace the current chip in the A500 or A2000 to
allow other hi-res modes, including 640 x 400 non-interlaced
images. This will require a new monitor such as the bi-sync
monitor under development by Commodore or any of the multi-sync
monitors now on the market from other sources. Sheldon
recommends that these promises for the future should not be the
basis for purchasing decisions. Experience with the computer
industry shows that such promises take years when they're lived
up to at all.

A lot of 1.4 software improvements are there to support the newer
hardware better. For example, the existing system fonts produce
very tiny (though sharp) menus, etc. on hi-resolution screens.
This can be seen on the interlaced Workbench today and will get
worse as resolutions increase. Multiple serial port support is
another issue we may see addressed by future releases, since
there is no standard presently.

Overscanned screen standards, color font support, fast file
system for floppy drives, and many other future developments are
in the works - though which will actually appear someday is
uncertain.

Sheldon then reiterated the advantages of Commodore's recent "go
slow" approach on system software development - primarily the
avoidance of massive upheavals every two years or so, where old
software becomes obsolete and new versions of everything must be
developed and purchased by the consumer.

At this point a break was declared before a question and answer
period between the meeting attendees and Sheldon Leemon.

Question: Where is Comic Setter?

Sheldon: Comic Setter is really, truly going to be out there
real soon. They (Gold Disk) should be shipping within weeks
(early October?)

Q: What else is available inexpensively besides the mouse for
drawing input?

SL: The favorite alternative to the mouse is a drawing table,
and those being produced for the Amiga are priced like those for
the IBM computers. They are all in the $300 - $500 price range.
Light pens are available for the Amiga, but drawing with a light
pen is like drawing with a bar of soap.

Q: Have you experienced booting from recoverable RAM disk with
the 1.3 version of Kickstart?

SL: I have a 1.3 Kickstart ROM in my 2000. That was the "party
favor" at the end of the last Developer's Conference. I have
seen it actually boot from the RAM disk and from a hard drive.
A1000 owners may still have a shot at auto-booting hard disk
drives, by using one of the third-party Kickstart ROM add-ons for
the A1000.

Q: How much has the effort that has been put into "PC"
compatibility detracted from other Amiga development efforts?

SL: I don't think that it really has. The bridge board has been
a by-product of Commodore's activity in the PC compatible market.
In terms of the bridge board interface project, Commodore has
gained some valuable experience they can use in other multiple
processor development in the future. Things like drop-in
Transputer boards, a hot issue in Europe. This concept uses
numerous processors working in parallel to accomplish tasks that
would be very expensive to do with a single processor. I don't
see a lot of effort being expended in the bridge board are these
days. There is a lot more work to be done.

Q: I use the FACC II disk cache system and recently saw an ad
for another product, a disk drive accelerator. Is this like the
old "fast load" tricks used with the C64 and 128?

SL: That sounds familiar, but I don't know of another system
except one that lets you reorganize the layout of data on your
floppies, but it is still standard AmigaDOS format. The fast
load techniques employed with the old Commodore serial disk drive
interface don't sound like they'd apply to the Amiga since the
Amiga disk system software is the limitation rather than the
hardware. Something like the 1.4 Fast File System for floppy
disk will use a whole new incompatible format to gain speed.

Q: I've been trying to do some color mapping work in high-
resolution mode and I need a better hardcopy. Will 1.3 help me
with this?

SL: Yes, this is precisely the kind of thing they are trying to
do with the new printer device in 1.3, since one of the problems
has been getting a one-to-one pixel ratio between the screen
bitmap and the printed image. The 1.3 Preferences program has a
new printer graphics screen in addition to the one you're used
to: width type (width in pixels, height in pixels), smoothing,
dithering, algorithm selection, density (dots per inch) selection
for printers which support it, and many more controls and
features for printed graphics. The best thing you could do prior
to 1.3 was to play around with margin settings until you got
something close to what you wanted.

Q: You've been evaluating hard drives. Do you have any
favorites at this point?

SL: I like Supra right now, because it has an easy to use
installation program for the A2000, and it has a fast DMA
controller. The A500 drive doesn't use the same installation
procedure, but is still a good drive.

Q: What about hard-card controllers?

SL: There really is only one Amiga hard-card drive right now.
That is the Pacific Peripherals Overdrive - well, Great Valley
Products also has one but it is not a DMA device. I like Great
Valley pretty well, and the board itself looks very well
produced, and uses a very fast drive. A non-DMA design
potentially gives you less problems because it will not contend
with the other Amiga hardware for DMA time slots, though under
most circumstances DMA drives will be faster.

Q: What about IFF formats? They are supposed to be
interchangeable, but recent IFF-supporting word processors seem
to have compatibility problems.

SL: Bit-mapped graphics are fairly straight-forward, while word
processors take any number of different approaches, with little
or no standardization. I don't have much hope for word processor
IFF standards. Animation is in much the same state, lacking
standardization.

Q: Music files have the same problem, don't they?

SL: Music files differ, but are not too hard to fudge unless
they are far apart in structure.

Q: What about ARP? Will Commodore ever embrace the ARP concept
and efforts to date?

SL: ARP was started about a year and a half ago by Charlie Heath
of MicroSmith's along with Scott Valentine(?) and others who were
somewhat disgusted with slow floppy speed. TriPOS was kind of
"grafted" onto the rest of the system, and there is a loss of
efficiency in converting data structures between TriPOS and C
software. They decided to try to get rid of all the BCPL stuff
they could. Their starting point was to replace all the CLI
commands which are coded in BCPL. They now have a lot of this
done, and in general the new routines are smaller and often have
additional features. Commodore's point of view is that it is
difficult to maintain code, especially assembly language code,
that was written outside the plant. Much of what was done with
ARP defeats the goal of maintainability, so Commodore has not
been too keen on ARP. They have, however, taken a look at what
has been done in ARP and other third-party software and are
adopting the ideas the outside developers have advanced.

Q: What about viruses, in particular the ones we're hearing
about that are not boot-block resident and therefore undetectable
by the various "vaccination" or virus-check utilities.

SL: I have not run into any of these viruses that do all these
other horrible things myself. "Trojan horse" viruses are the
type that hide inside an otherwise useful looking program and do
their damage when you run them, rather than when you warm-boot
the computer. I haven't seen one myself yet, but that hardly
means they aren't floating around.

Q: What about support for FORTH, Modula-2, or FORTRAN on the
Amiga?

SL: Excellent support is available for all of the programming
languages you've mentioned. Multi-FORTH is a good product,
several Modulas are around, and Absoft's FORTRAN 77 product is
very good. It was actually done by a company here in Rochester,
Michigan. Absoft did the FORTRAN sold by Microsoft for the
Macintosh. There is an APL now too, but I don't know much about
it.

Q: There are so many Amiga magazines out now, which do you
recommend?

SL: You're right, the Amiga has spawned a number of newcomers in
the magazine market. Right now I'd still recommend Amazing
Computing, though they have some editorial unevenness, and
AmigaWorld. Those are the main ones. I've done a lot of work
with COMPUTE! Publications over the years, and while they haven't
announced anything yet I think you'll be seeing a disk and
magazine combination from them in the future.

After this Sheldon demonstrated a "Wheel of Fortune" game from a
Public Domain disk he is donating to our library. The game was
done by a member of his club (Slipped Disk?). The game includes
a cute disclaimer intended to throw off the dogs in case of any
threat of lawsuit over Copyrights or Trade or Service Marks.

GVP Controller Review:
(Michael Cox)

<>

After I finally decided it was time to buy a hard drive for my
A2000, I spent much time researching the various products of many
third party manufacturers.

Of the two basic types of drives available, both the ST-506
(originally designed for use in the IBM PC) and SCSI (Small
Computer System Interface - used on the Apple Macintosh) drives
can be used on the Amiga. An SCSI drive is something of an
"intelligent" device, in that it will automatically remap for bad
sectors independent of the host, and is considered faster in data
transfer than the ST-506 design. Another interesting aspect of
SCSI drives is that they are usually treated as "devices," rather
than just disk drives. The advantage of this is that an SCSI
controller will be able to "talk" to other peripherals without
having to define a new protocol. This enables one to use optical
storage devices (among other things), in the future.

Having decided on an SCSI-type drive, I looked at what the
companies had to offer. While many of the third party
manufacturers have similar products, only one offered something
that none of the others had. Great Valley Products, of Paoli,
Pennsylvania, has incorporated a space for RAM memory expansion
on some of their controllers, effectively allowing you to save
the use of an expansion slot in the 2000. As I already had one
memory board in my Amiga, adding a hard drive controller and a
separate memory board would normally use up three of the five
slots. With the GVP controller, I could expand my system to 5
MBytes and still have three open slots.

In my research, I talked to owners of many brands of controllers;
Commodore A2090 owners, along with users of Supra, Cltd., and
other configurations. While the majority of these people had seen
little or no difficulty with their controllers, only one brand
stood out as being the most trouble-free. This was the GVP Impact
controller.

I found that the Impact controller was available in three
different designs. One design is their "hardcard." This is a
controller card with room on the card to physically mount a 3.5
inch hard drive. This has the advantage of leaving your 5.25 inch
drive bay open for such things as the floppy disk drive that
comes with the Bridgeboard, for instance. No expansion memory is
available on-board. The other two cards use remotely mounted
drives, either in the drive bay or external to the Amiga (or
both). Both can support up to seven SCSI peripherals, with the
main difference between the two being the amount and type of
memory they can hold.

The controller I purchased (A2000 2/0) has sockets for 32 1 Mbit
RAM chips (256Kx4 configuration), for a total of 2 MBytes of
additional memory. This memory can be added in 1 MByte chunks, or
16 chips at a time. The other controller (A2000 1/0) uses 256Kx1
RAM chips. These are the chips that have been making the news for
the last two years (as their price to the consumer went from
$3.00 each to a high of over $15.00). Small lots of these chips
currently sell for $12.00 each. To fully populate this 1 meg
card, 32 of these chips are required. However, similar to the 2
MByte board, you have the options of either installing half (or
all) the memory at once, or just using the controller sans
memory (and wait for the RAM prices to drop).

I felt the documentation for the GVP controller was above
average. My only real complaint is that the 27 page booklet was
actually for the A2000 1/0 model, with a 1 page addendum for the
2 MByte board. After an introduction describing the features of
the product, the booklet goes on to cover the installation of the
controller, drive and software. Additional chapters cover
installing fast RAM, multiple SCSI devices, drive partition
sizes, and SCSI error handling and correction. The controller's
technical specifications were also included.

The included installation software was very straightforward and
easy to use. It automatically recognized my Seagate ST-277N 64
MByte drive, and offered to format two 32 MByte partitions. When
I chose one 40 MByte and one 24 MByte partition instead, it not
only formatted the drive to my specs, but also updated my
mountlist to reflect these parameters. The software will
automatically install Workbench v1.3 on the drive, and assign it
as the SYS: disk. The software I received had WB version 34.18
and worked perfectly, though I later purchased and installed
version 34.20 (the version that was officially released in
October).

The only problem I experienced was quite minor in scope. The
Seagate has its Drive Activity LED mounted directly to the bottom
of its PC board. Since I wanted to see this LED without having to
look at the black front plate (comes with the drive) sticking out
of my tan Amiga, I simply removed the black plate from the drive,
desoldered the LED, attached a 90-degree header to the drive's
PC board, and plugged in the cable from the Amiga's remote hard
drive activity LED.

The GVP has a couple of advantages over Commodore's new
controller, the A2090A. Obviously, the capability of having both
memory and controller on the same card is one of them.
Furthermore, while both controllers will autoboot with the new
v1.3 ROMs, only the GVP can truly autoboot an SCSI Seagate drive
(The A2090A has trouble with the Seagates because they take a few
seconds longer to initialize. The GVP ROMs take this into account
and wait for a signal from the drive before completing the
boot-up.). Both Commodore and Great Valley Products controllers
require a small partition to boot from when using the FFS (Fast
File System) format, since the Amiga cannot recognize FFS
directly from the v1.3 operating system

Direct Memory Access

Both the A2090A and the GVP controller use DMA (Direct Memory
Access) for the transfer of data. The A2090A does this by using
the internal DMA channel in the machine. This causes problems
when displaying "severe-overscan", since both functions are
handled by the same custom chip. The GVP controllers instead use
their own DMA channel to a static 4k on-board cache. This method
not only keeps data transfers fast, but by not using the Amiga's
DMA channel, it prevents any problems when using a combination of
DMA and overscan.

In the two months since I installed the GVP Impact controller, it
has run 24 hours per day, with absolutely no errors. Any
questions I had for the technical staff were answered while I
was on the phone to them, often by an engineer. The boot ROMs
were shipped to me via UPS Blue Label as soon as Commodore
released their Kickstart 1.3 ROMs. I even found that I could have
obtained the same card and drive combo directly from GVP for less
than I paid to the dealer I purchased them from, and that dealer
had the least expensive set-up of those I had checked (GVP said
they even re-work the drive LED before shipping).

In Summary...

I have found the people at Great Valley Products to offer
something that all computer owners need; great products, and
great service, all at a great cost-to-performance ratio.

--------

1 Mbit chips vs. 256 Kbit chips

At $12.00 apiece for the 256K chips, it will cost $48.00 to equal
one 1 Mbit chip. When they can be found. Right now, it can be
difficult to secure these particular integrated circuits. On the
other hand, 1 Mbitchips are going for around $30.00 each, and the
cost is expected to dropsometime in the first quarter of 1989, as
manufacturers meet demands for the chips created by new computer
systems such as the PS/2 line. 1 Mbit chipswere not affected by
the artificially high cost induced by our government to prevent
the Japanese manufacturers from "dumping" low-cost memory in
theUnited States. Also, companies like Toshiba are now shipping
"commercialsamples" of their 4 Mbit RAM chips. This new
technology will also help drive down the cost of lower-capacity
memory chips.

Trading Galore:

First we had a picture trade. Users were urged to send in a disk
full of pictures and, in return, were given a disk full of the
best pictures that had been collected so far. The picture trade
was, and will hopefully continue to be, a GREAT success!

Because of this, I have decided to open up a new trade which
allows everyone to participate--not just those of us with
pictures. Send me a disk full of anything you want. (Music,
Art, Animations, Sound files, and Public Domain/Shareware
software...anything!) Include a SASE (please remember the
stamps!), and I will send your disk back to you filled with
whatever you want. Just tell me whether you want music, art,
software (you can even specify a specific pd/shareware program
but I can't guarantee that I have it), and I'll send it back. On
request, I'll even send disk copies of all issues of Amy Today.

The disks currently copied and ready to be traded are:
1 - Amy Today Picture Disk #1
2 - Amy Today Picture Disk #2
3 - Amy Today Animation Disk #1
4 - Amy Today Back Issues #1
5 - Amy Today Music Disk #1**
6 - Amy Today Picture Disk #3**

**Both of these coming soon.

Send your disk and a SASE to:

Newsletter Trading:
(From Issue 1-1)

I am looking for Amiga user groups who would like to trade
newsletters with me. Every month I will send you three issues of
Amy Today and, in return, I would like a copy of your
newsletter. I know a lot of this trading takes place and would
love to get involved. The more articles and information that I
have about the Amiga, the better I can make Amy Today. If you
are interested please drop me a line on GEnie, Plink, or by mail.
I would really appreciate a sample newsletter and will mail you
Amy Today in return.

--------------------[BEGIN FORMAL CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT]--------------

(With approximately 40 people in the conference line, we begin...)

(CBM*HARV) Tonite, our special guests are from Readysoft, soon to be
publishing "AMAX", the Macintosh emulator for the Amiga.
Readysoft... Thanks, please intro yourselves, and let
everyone know what amax is all about

(*READYSOFT) Here tonite is Don Holtz David Foster to be
             inserted

The hardware adaptor also allows a Mac 800K disk drive to
be connected as well as passing through the Amiga disk
             port.

(CBM*HARV) READYSOFT - THE TWO QUESTIONS PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK IS "HOW
MUCH" AND "WHEN." DO YOU HAVE AN ANTICIPATED PRICE AND
           RELEASE DATE YET?

(*READYSOFT) The retail is tentatively $150 and the "when" is ten
             tatively February

(CBM*HARV) OKAY GREAT. READY FOR SOME QUESTIONS?

(*READYSOFT) sure

(TERRY R) Readysoft, will the mac drive be readable by the Amiga? ga

(*READYSOFT) if you mean will the Mac drive be usable from Amiga
             mode...

(TERRY R) thats what I mean

(*READYSOFT) the answer is not directly, only through supplied transfer
software...that will allow you to transfer files in both
             directions

(GROGERS) thanks for being here, will the Amax run Midi software? ga

(*READYSOFT) this is next on our list of things to do however...we are
pessimistic because most midi software goes directly to
             the hardware

(GENEH) Do we have to wait for DOS 1.4 to emulate a 1 Meg Mac..and will
we be able to use an Amiga hard drive partition in Mac mode
        like the bridgeboard

(*READYSOFT) we have had a 3 meg Mac running. the new chip set from
Commodore makes life easier as it gives 1 Meg continuous
memory which is what the Mac is looking for, however we
have devised a method to use all of the memory available
but with a degree of reduced compatibility...There will be
no hard drive support in the first release.

(CMI*BILL) Is there any thought going into support for AppleTalk or
other network? Are any thought going on to support Apple
           talk?

(*READYSOFT) we have ideas for AppleTalk but not in the first rel
             ease

(MAVERICK) is this going to run basic programs only like the amiga
transformer... or will it do graphics and sound GA

(*READYSOFT) No the compatibility we have found to be very good with
most progs...Word 3.0, Excel, HyperCard, PageMaker,
MacPaint, MacWrite and all system versions
             run OK.

(AMIGA*BOB) What's the availability and cost of the 64K and 128K ROMS??

(*READYSOFT) 64k's are readily avail for $40, 128's harder to find;
            $100

(*MR*CURIOUS*) Can it access expanded memory on an A1000? Like w
/Insider? What lost of compatibility if so? If any? ga

(*READYSOFT) A-Max will find all mem in the system. Insider not yet
             tried tho.

(CHRISTIAN) What will be the capabilities of ... Hypercard under Amax
and how much testing have your done.

(*READYSOFT) Hyper seems to run very well but not yet
             extensively tested.

(OES928) What emulation does it do ? macPlus mac se macii? ga

(*READYSOFT) We take 64K and 128K ROMs. This
determines what machine you get. Other ROMs may be later
             supported.

(*HARRY) How fast is AMAX compared to a Mac+ and what are the re
quirements for the 3Meg model you mentioned <1Meg fat ag
         nus..what else?>

(*READYSOFT) AMAX runs a little faster than a Mac PLUS.....Just a
regular A2000 with 2-meg card. Any mem is now supported as
             well.

(DEMO*D) will the AMAX run on '020ed amiga? Any thinking on a NuBus
         adapter?

(*READYSOFT) The 68020 requires the 128K ROms. Apple bugs in the 64's
mean they won't work in 32 bits....No thoughts on NuBus as
             yet.

(DR*GLENN) how compatible are we ...could i run a mac arcade game...is
           the amy mouse supported?

(*READYSOFT) We have run Megaroids, Loderunner. Mac games pale compared
to Amiga anyway.... often copy protected which causes
problems with Amax. The Amiga mouse emulates the Mac's; no
             problems.

(UK JEZ) readysoft... is A-max code in any way related to Dave Small's
stuff?... also, Can Amax read mac format disks with no extra
disk drives...? if not, why not?

(*READYSOFT) No completely independent of Data Pacific/DSmall....We can
read only 34% of a Mac disk in an Amiga drive.....because
of the multispeed format that the Mac uses our cart. has a
connector for a 800K mac drive which gives full disk
compat ..... YOU OWE US A STAR
             GLIDER II .

(UK JEZ) thanx readysoft... my specs in front of me say the mac bit
density stretches from 1.3 microsecs, to 2.0... sounds like
its feasible to read more than 34% on an Amiga! indeed i do!

(J. WOLF) How much is A-MAX? Do you guys supply or know where we can
get 128K roms? How is the screen proportions?...How does
A-MAX run with a Processor Accelerator at 14mhz? ga

(*READYSOFT) Approx $150....We wont supply roms, but Computer Shopper
has listings. Under investigation are other sources
.....Screen proportions are good in interlaced or 640 by
400 mode. We have several screen formats incl. a 512 by
342, for full video compat....we also support the A2024 in
1008 by 800 line mode and the new chip set which gives 640
             by 400 non interlaced.

(RON K) Can AMAX support a SCSI hard drive instead of floppy? Will my
external drive...attach to it and be readily accessible?
...also will it work with all amy models or is it a 2000 card

(*READYSOFT) Hard disk support will not be in first realease. All amiga
drives can be used.....AMAx works with ALL Amiga mod
els.....the amiga drives use a special AMAX format under
the Mac the format used is runs much faster under the Mac
             OS then Amigdos would .

(TERRY R) for those of us who are going to call our dealers on monday
to place early orders what will your upgrade policy be when
newer..and better releases come out. Is there a trade in
policy> we need at least 4 units NOW !!!

(*READYSOFT) Registration cards are supplied. You will be notified of
             upgrades for reduced cost.

(SRU249) WILL IT DO COLOR WILL IT WORK ON A-500 ? GA

(*READYSOFT) Works on ALL amigas.....Macs other than Mac II's are mono,
so we can only use 2 colours at any time. GA

(PROF. HAWK) It will allow for full multitasking with the AMIGA right?
Also physically, how big is it?

(*READYSOFT) Sorry, multitaksing won't be in the first release < we
have future thoughts for this tho> the cart is 2 inches by
4 inches with a cable to connect to the drive port to the
             cart.

(CRYO) PA ? not answered

(CBM*HARV) DOES AMAX WORK WITH THE CMI PROCESS ACCELLERATOR

(*READYSOFT) probably. send us one and we'll find out. GA

(*HARRY) Without any hard disk support, what would you consider a
acceptable Mac setup to run lets say PageMaker . On the Amiga that is.

(*READYSOFT) We run Pagemaker 1.2 on just about any system....eg. 1 meg
             a500/a2000 or 512k a1000. GA

(SLEEZYCZ) This question may have already been asked but I got here
late. Does AMAX use amiga drives? And do you recommend
particular MAC roms over others? and what do you think the
           price will be? GA

(*READYSOFT) yes, with a custom format....we can use 64K or 128K
roms...128's are better....price:$150 tentativley for AMax

(*REK) do you lose use of your current external disk with the card in
       place ...

(*READYSOFT) no we have pass thru for ext drives; all of which may be
             used with Amax. GA

(*REK) if so how dow A1000 use those ? ga

(*READYSOFT) No you need an Apple compat 800K dble sided drive. full
disk compat. with a mac 800k drive. ...limited compat with
             mac disks in amiga drives.

(*BUD*H) I used Amax at world of commodore, thought it was great. Will
it notice my 2 meg expansion? When will it be released? When
         will it be available

(*READYSOFT) Yes we have mem expansion support now. release about Feb.

---------[END OF FORMAL PORTION OF CONFERENCE]------------

(The remaining 60% of this transcript is a basically unedited capture
of the informal conversation which followed the hour-long formal period
above... all of the "hellos" and "goodbyes" have been mercifully
removed :-).

(CBM*HARV) OKAY I HAVE A QUESTION.. FOR THE BENEFIT OF READYSOFT, HOW
MANY OF YOU ARE DEFINITELY/PERHAPS/MAYBE/NOT INTERESTED IN
BUYING AMAX WHEN IT IS RELEASED

(AMIGA*BOB) Yes
(DJJAMES) i have my roms already
(ANDROID) I have heard the using the old chipset will only give you a
128k mac but the new chipset will do a 1meg Mac +.What new Chipset?me
(CRYO) ReadySoft: Does Amax use the Amiga Cust. chips for drawing or
your own routines?
(ALLEN M) I will
(DR*GLENN) maybe
(SLEEZYCZ) Very much so!
(NY*JIM) <---- quite interested
(OES928) I will as soon as it available
(TERRY R) Readysoft: would it be possible for you to upload complete
specs for AMAX to the library here. It would help a lot. thanks.
(-NOMAD-) sounds ok
(CMI*BILL) probably.
(RON K) Will you accept direct orders? If so address and order info
puhleeze! GA
(GROGERS) FlashBack question: how long does a backup < 20 Meg > take
and whats the error correction?
(JIM*M) I will
(CRYO) < will get one for development.
(DULNERD) maybe
(TOM H) Yes, with more info
(ANDROID) me
(LUGNUTS) Mega Interested !
(DEMO*D) What system resources in the amiga will the AMAX support?

(PROF. HAWK) i will by one for my business
(TERRY R) definitely want some
(*BUD*H) I want one yesterday! Love Amiga but some MAC stuff is great!
(J. WOLF) I will be buying an A-MAX.
(NY*JIM) ReadySoft - What was the most insurmountable problem you
overcame?
(J. WOLF) That is once I get the 128K roms and I may know where to get
tehm.
(AMICUS) I guess it wasn't insurmountable then, was it? :->
(UK JEZ) readysoft: why could u not read more than 34% of the mac disk
on an Amiga!? my timings report suggests u can read nearly all of it,
through the use of software quantisation of the bitstream.
(ANDROID) Wheew! Now THAT's FEEDBACK!!!
(-NOMAD-) a late comer<--- what resolution does it use, will flicker
fixer work if hires, and does ready sell the roms
(NY*JIM) I said it that way on purpose, John :->
(J. WOLF) Nomad, a Flicker Fixer will work.
(*BUD*H) What does Apple think about it? They seem pretty selfish with
their mac sturr
(*READYSOFT) you can have any amount of memory with the old chip set.
(OES928) doea max have any problems now trhat will delay feb. shipment?
(AMICUS) Wow, the AMAX will add a whole new dimension to Amiga piracy!
:->
(-NOMAD-) good ques bud, is it legal or will we all get sued along with
hp
(J. WOLF) Readysoft, when's Apple gonna sue you? 8-}
(AMIGA*BOB) Starting with the operating system John...
(*READYSOFT) Central Coast has fooled around with reading MAC disks on
amiga drives with limited success...
(*BUD*H) Can they sue if you don't provide the Rom
(DEMO*D) Amicus,...That's what I was thinkin!
(*READYSOFT) we may investigate furher in future.
(J. WOLF) Jez, why don't you write a MAC-2-AMIGA conversion program to
prove that it can be done?
(*READYSOFT) Thing are looking good for Feb. Finalizing packaging-
/production details.
(AMICUS) Central Cost's PR said they'll have a drive on April 1.
(CBM*HARV) jez... you could have it finished by what, tomorrow?
(NY*JIM) 2 weeks, Harv
(*READYSOFT) jez, send us some code.
(UK JEZ) j wolf- its tempting... but ive got a lot of other unfinished
projects that i oughta try and finish first! i think george chanm-
berlain was workoing on one wasnt he!?
(DJJAMES) so...where do we get MAc boot disks?
(NY*JIM) From work, Dan.  :->
(DEMO*D) ReadySoft...how bout som FastBack info?
(TOM H) *READY, I am intersted in some MAC software for electronic
design. I am concerned about reliability, compatability, and any
problems with copy protections devices required wit some software
packages.
(AMICUS) Yeah, right, DJ. Sounds like piracy city.
(CBM*HARV) good question DJ...can one just go out and buy Mac system
software like the Enhancer and MS Dos??
(*READYSOFT) mac system and finder can be tranferred from Mac diusks.
(-NOMAD-) will it let me hook up to appletalk???
(AMICUS) Oh, it's an emulator, it's not piracy. I Forgot. It's just
like the Transformer!
(*READYSOFT) FLASHBACK not fastback
(SILVERLOCK) Now we need a Lattice Cross compilier !
(J. WOLF) Ya, but how do we get the MAC system & finder without
pirating the stuff?
(GROGERS) Flashback, HOW FAST?
(DEMO*D) sorry
(*BUD*H) WIll it emulate a MAC emulating an Apple II? Just won-
dering... That would look pretty neat.
(CRYO) I WANT LIGHTSPEED C!! ;->
(*READYSOFT) It's much better than the transformer. FULL SPEED.
(AMICUS) Wolf, it doesn't sound like you have any moral or physical
obstacles in your way...
(ANDROID) INFO#24 p 80: Mac Emulator costs $150 and is only a 128k
system unless you get new chipset[then 1meg Mac +]
(ANDROID) Readysoft?
(*REK) <-thinks we should go back into auditorium mode
(*READYSOFT) send us an APPLE II emulator for the Mac.
(LUGNUTS) Even faster with LUCAS installed :^>
(*BUD*H) You can buy Finder or , I think it's freely distributed at
Apple Dealers.
(MIKE-SPAR) now I'll have to subscribe to Mac Journals too!
(TOM H) <- agree...
(*READYSOFT) ANDROID... LISTEN.
(*BUD*H) Readysoft, there is one available already, emulates a IIE
(*READYSOFT) YOU can use ALL your memory with the old chip set
(AMICUS) Anybody have experience putting in a second internal drive in
a 2000?
(J. WOLF) Amicus, I'm trying to find out where to BUY the MAC OS.
(ANDROID) listening
(AMIGA*BOB) Yep John
(CBM*HARV) hey john, this is a MAC conference! :->
(CMI*BILL) Yes, I have, AMICUS.
(*READYSOFT) system and finder can be purchased from Apple
(ANDROID) ok. So INFO was wrong. they do that some times. sorry.
(DR*GLENN) yes john... look at the dip switches in the back
(J. WOLF) Amicus, I installed my second interal 2000 drive by jut
following the directions.
(NY*JIM) Gee, we can finally run VC>! ;->
(NY*JIM) er, VC0
(CBM*HARV) VCO? yeah.
(AMICUS) Bob, I have a chinon, same as the default one, do I need to
pull that J200 jumper?
(J. WOLF) What is VC0?
(*BUD*H) How about HyperCard?
(AMICUS) Well, I didn't get directions. I junked a spare drive I had
laying around...
(OJS566) Readysoft, do you mean if we have 3 meg we can use all of it?
(*READYSOFT) Hyper card runs
(NY*JIM) Visual Conferencing, what ACO was based on
(CMI*BILL) Yes you do, John. That jumper enables/disables DF1:.
(DR*GLENN) amicus..there was something you had to fix in the back-
...jumper or dip swirch
(ANDROID) oh yeah, Red Ryder. Heard some good stuff about that one
(J. WOLF) Ready, what about using MAC add on hardware?
(AMICUS) And scavenged standoffs and screws from the junk box...
(*READYSOFT) yes all of 3 megs usuable
(CMI*BILL) Remember that you have to configure the second drive as
device 1 rather than 0.
(CBM*HARV) Readysoft...sounds great. Sign me up. [waving money]
(*BUD*H) Will it use my Apple ImageWriter II?
(*READYSOFT) no Mac add-on hardware
(AMIGA*BOB) Yep Bill...otherwise you got bad juju
(OJS566) Thats extraordinary!!
(DR*GLENN) ah yeah it was the jumper..it has to be moved over or
something
(*READYSOFT) Will work with Imagewriter II
(DEMO*D) What system resources in the amiga will the AMAX support?

(J. WOLF) Ready, does A-MAX work with a 68010 installed?
(ALLEN M) READYSOFT - Have you tested any MIDI software with it?
(NY*JIM) Macs have add-on hardware? sheesh
(MIKE-SPAR) Ready-how about copying Mac ROM to WCS on 1000
(DJJAMES) READYSOFT - Autoconfig memory only? what about AddMem
memory?
(*READYSOFT) parallel and serial suppoerted
(AMICUS) No, more like I thought I killed it when I connected the
ribbon and the power... no response from either drive. Manual says
J301 is the one to diddle,
(-NOMAD-) I imagine it will work with my apple laserwriter on the
serial port, true??
(*REK) what software have you found that does not work on AMAC
(AMICUS) I can't even find it on the ma-board.
(TOM H) *READYSOFT, would be interested in NuBuss/MAC Amiga expansion?
(CBM*HARV) nomad - he said it talks to serial port
(*READYSOFT) 68010 only with 128K roms
(TOM H) re: would you be...
(*READYSOFT) we use WCS in A1000
(AMICUS) Readysoft, what is the official explanation for buyers, as to
how to get the system software and ROMs?
(CMI*BILL) J301 is the one you install the jumper on for DF1: supprt.
You have to change your device number to 1 though.
(J. WOLF) Good. I don't want the 64K roms. I want the 128k roms.
(*READYSOFT) will work with laserwriter in serial mode
(UK JEZ) readysoft: support for 256k roms is surely quite important,
since all macs come with it nowadays dont they!?
(CRYO) nite grog
(AMICUS) Bill, you remember where J301 is located?
(CMI*BILL) There should be a set of jumpers on the drive for device 0,
1, 2, 3 support.
(-NOMAD-) what's the hardware setup for a2000/a1000 i have one of each
(DJJAMES) AMICUS - under gray disk ribbon cable
(AMICUS) Ah, didn't realize that about the drive. I'll look...
(CBM*HARV) BEFORE THE CROWD THINS OUT I WANT TO THANK READYSOFT FOR
TAKING THE TIME TO COME HERE TONITE AND CHAT WITH US.
(*READYSOFT) if you own mac system/finder, transfer them, else buy them
from Apple and transfer them.
(CMI*BILL) Right beside the disk drive cable on the motherboard.
(TOM H) Yes thanks!
(GROGERS) yeah, THANKS for comming!
(ANDROID) clapclapclapclapclap
(MIKE-SPAR) HURRAY
(-NOMAD-) muchos gracious
(OES928) Thanks, I'm looking forward to AMAX
(CMI*BILL) Thanks for coming! And don't forget to come back often!
(*READYSOFT) our pleasure
(CRYO) Thanks, now where the *&#%$ is it? ;->
(DR*GLENN) flicker fixer okay with max?
(DJJAMES) READYSOFT - will AMAX support non-autoconfig memory? that is
memory that gets AddMemed?
(J. WOLF) The only thing the ST was good for is now done better on the
Amiga!
(*BUD*H) what do you think of the response Readysoft? We all filled
out a list at World of COmmodore?
(-NOMAD-) glenn, they say yes to ff
(*READYSOFT) flicker fixer should work
(AMICUS) Ah, found J301. Thanks.
(TOM H) *READYSOFT, are you considering NuBus expansion hardware or
would you be?
(*READYSOFT) all amiga system mem should be founs.
(J. WOLF) The Flicker Fixer will work since it is transparent to the
system.
(CRYO) What about copying the ROMs into 32 bit memory? My '020 mihgt
have a fun time with it...
(RON K) Thanks Hey dont you turn down my money! will you accept direct
orders?
(CMI*BILL) I've got some here, John... Drop by and I'll give you one!
:>
(-NOMAD-) wolf, does AMAX work in hi res mode?
(*READYSOFT) Great response send name and addr for more info .GA
(J. WOLF) A-MAX works in 640x400 or 512x342.
(SPOLING) noech
(AMICUS) Oh, yeah, is it snowing on your side of town, Bill?
(DR*GLENN) john...i dont think you need a spare jumper...unless there
were none there to begon with
(*READYSOFT) No orders yet. YES in about Feb. Call later. GA
(AMICUS) there is no jumper there. Manual says you need one to add
internal drive.
(-NOMAD-) wolf, thanks, 512x342? is that something special they do?
(DJJAMES) twist the pins together john ;->
(CMI*BILL) Not here, John. It almost never snows in Portland...
(OES928) adios muchachos
(J. WOLF) 512x342 is the MAC resolution.
(*BUD*H) Can you transfer AMAX stuff to work on Amiga Drives if you
hook them up via null modem?
(AMICUS) Might just do that, DJ. :->
(*READYSOFT) Mac screen is 512 by 342, some progs expect this. GA
(AMIGA*BOB) I think I did a wire rap on mine John
(AMICUS)
(DR*GLENN) that 2nd int drive was a problem...docs didnt say all....i
think i had a jumer i moved over a spot or two
(DEMO*D) John..you didn't buy an old Buster Tower 2000 did you?
(RON K) How about the phone number to call, quick I am drooling all
over my keyboard!
(MIKE-SPAR) will it be easy or hard to transfer MAC progs to AMIGA hard
disk??
(OJS566) Readysoft, found any software that doesnt work?
(AMICUS) Nope, got a burr-and gnu one.
(UK JEZ) bob- is a wire rap where u speak very quickly in a monotonic
voice about electronics ?
(MIKE-SPAR) SCSI that is
(J. WOLF) No Hard disk support yet.
(DR*GLENN) well i guess this means john bought a christmas presnt for
himself
(DJJAMES) argh jez
(AMICUS) Jez, you sing rap?
(*REK) hope you get an anwser 0js566
(SPOLING) Let me ask the most asked question of the evening , Where & how much money do I send to our honoured guest for a mac
emulator
(AMIGA*BOB) Like right Jez....with a beat
(*READYSOFT) ReadySoft is at 416 731 4175 . Call tuesday.
(AMICUS) Hey, Glenn, who else would buy me a 2000? :->
(-NOMAD-) ready, do you support overscan i.e. 704x480 and i understand
macs support many resolutions over the standard true?
(UK JEZ) amicus, i saida hip, a hibbit, a hip hip a hoppa, singa....
(TOM H) John, did Santa bring a 2000?
(CBM*HARV) spoling...about $150 come february or so
(DR*GLENN) hehehe...i had my 2000...bought camcorder this year!
(UK JEZ) .. you dont stop to rocka to the bang baby booga to the rhtym
of the boogydy beat..!?
(*READYSOFT) AMAX will be out in FEB. approx $150.
(J. WOLF) Jez, has no musical taste.
(AMICUS) go, jez, go with that hep pale-man beat!
(NY*JIM) easy, Jez... easy!
(DEMO*D) JEZ! you watch all the tapes yet?
(CRYO) Ready: does Amax use the Amy's cust. chips?
(*READYSOFT) Overscan not yet supported.GA
(AMICUS) Jez is paler than me. Imagine that!
(DR*GLENN) hey jez...glad to see your back...we thought you disappeared

Amazing is a program which lets you create, store, and solve mazes
     using 3-D Graphics.

I found the source code for a Maze game stuck in with a bunch of PD
software I recieved. In some ways the programming was interesting,
but in other ways some features came up short.

The product you have here is a result of re-writing that source code
to experiment with a few ideas I had. A few lines of the original
Maze-Display algorithm remain intact. I do not know who the original
author of this product was, but I credit them with the conception &
design of this game. Thanks also to C.Heath for a dandy file
requestor. Please send any feedback to S.CORDON (that's me folks)

     ****************
       INSTRUCTIONS
     ****************

Once you have started the program, you can move around the maze with
the Cursor keys. The Left/Right Cursor keys will turn, and the Up
Cursor key will move forward. You can peek at a map by pressing
the Space bar. A Single menu lists some other options :
          ABOUT - Display Header
          SHOW - Display the Map
NEW - Have the Computer generate a different maze. NOTE: This
program is not very good about creating mazes.
You are better off creating your own.
CLEAR - Start the maze over (if Editing this clears the maze)
OPEN - Load a Maze from the disk (Needs a 'Mazes' subdirectory)
SAVE - Save a Maze that you have created
EDIT - Enter the Maze Editor. This is a bit crude, but works.
The Cursor keys will move your Cursor.
                       F1  = Toggle Maze Block
                       F2  =    Set Maze Block
                       F3  =  Clear Maze Block
                       F4  =    Set Starting Point
                       F5  =    Set Ending Point
                       ESC =   Done Editing.

EW Exploding Windows, version 1.4

EW gives you "exploding" windows. This means that when windows (and also
requesters) are opened, they open in a more exciting manner than you're
used to seeing - a rectangle grows from a very small size to the size that
the final window or requester will be. Windows and requesters that are
closed get kind of the reverse treatment - they shrink away to nothing.

To use, just type EW (or click on its Workbench icon) and EW will install
itself and start intercepting OpenWindow(), CloseWindow(), Request(), and
EndRequest() calls. To remove EW, just type EW (or click on its Workbench
icon) and it will tell the background EW to go away. If you really like it,
you might want to put it in your startup sequence. If running EW from the
CLI, you can also specify -S to prevent EW from displaying status messages.
Note that you do NOT need to use RUN or RUNBACK to invoke EW.

Command line format:

  EW [-F0] [-F1] [-L0] [-L1] [-RG] [-RP] [-S0] [-S1]

where:

-F0 selects unfilled (single lines) explosion/implosion
  -F1 selects filled (semi-solid) explosion/implosion (default)
  -L0 selects solid lines
  -L1 selects dashed lines (default)
-RG selects "grow rectangle" exploding/imploding style
-RP selects "project rectangle" exploding/imploding style (default)
-S0 disables status / credit messages
-S1 enables status / credit messages (default)

The above options can appear in any order and are not case-sensitive.

Release History:

1.4, 03-Jan-1989
  - Don't start explosion/implosion off screen if pointer is above the
top of a pulled-down screen. (This could cause rather spectacular
crashes when EW 1.3 was running).

1.3, 02-Jan-1989
  - No longer needs to be invoked via RUN or RUNBACK.
  - Now allows CLI window that invoked it to be closed.
  - New command line options for rectangle explode/implode style:
-RG (grow rectangle) or -RP (project rectangle, default)
  - New command line options for filled/unfilled explode/implode:
      -F0 (unfilled) or -F1 (filled)
  - New command line options for line patterns:
-L0 for solid line, -L1 for dashed line (default)

1.2, 25-Aug-1988
  - New command line option -S (silent) prevents any status/credit messages
    from being displayed.

1.1, 18-Aug-1988
  - Can now be run from the Workbench.
  - A Workbench icon is included.
  - The program size has been reduced by about 16%.
  - EW now checks to make sure it is running under version 1.2 or later of
    the Amiga operating system.

1.0, 15-Aug-1988
  - First release.

Workbench Disk Special HandyIcons Requires 1.2

HandyIcons is an extension to the Workbench menu strip which
permits the user to run user-selectable Tools by menu selection.
The present version only supports Workbench Tools - not Projects.
The number of Tools is limited to font size & current vertical resolution
of your Workbench screen. Type Size | Hires | Interlace
                             Topaz 8 | 22 | 47 Topaz 9 | 19 | 41
                             Topaz 11 | 15 | 34

                             Tool Selection

Tools can be selected by the user in two ways:

               * Workbench Extended Selection
               * Workbench Tool Types

Extended Selection is the fast and more flexable method of selection.
The Tools selected in this way will be displayed in the menu before those
selected by Tool Types. To use this technique:

       * Open disks, drawers, ect. to display the Tool Icons of interest

       * Press the mouse select button over a blank part of the screen
or window to insure de-selection of all other icons

       * Select the HandyIcons icon

       * Select your menu Tools While continuing to press a Shift key

       * Release the Shift key, go to the Workbench menu and choose Open
( Shortcut: On the last Tool double-click while Shifting )

Tool Types is the way to select Tools without going through
the effort of Extended Selection every time. It's possible to use Extended
Selection and Tool Types simultaneously, but if you select more Tools
than displayable, Tools at the bottom of this list won't be rendered
in the menu. To use this technique:

       * Select the HandyIcons icon

       * Choose Info from the Worbench menu

       * Select the Add gadget & Type Pathname(s) to your Tool(s)

       * Select the Save gadget when finished

The next time you run HandyIcons these Tools will automatically
be included in your menu. Some examples & suggestions:

Clock ________________ /These Tools would be in the
Preferences \same drawer as this Program
               Utilities/Notepad ------------ Extras:Tools/MicroEmacs -------< Volume names (Extras:)
 Together / Extras:Tools/Fed \whenever possible

Note: Even though it's permissible to use relative pathnames, your
safest bet is using full volume & pathnames. This insures HandyIcons will
find the Tool no matter what directory HandyIcons currently resides.

[More] HandyWB

We now have a means to start HandyIcons from a CLI.
Only the Tool Types method of selection applies but - by placing it in
your startup-sequence - it's possible to have menu access to your tools
immediately after booting.

Using HandyWB without any arguments defaults to looking for
HandyIcons in Sys:System drawer (Sys:System/HandyIcons). If for some
reason you don't want HandyIcons there, simply add the real pathname
as the first argument.

Examples: LoadWB - or - LoadWB
                   HandyWB HandyWB Extras:Tools/HandyIcons

To take advantage of this:

       * Copy HandyWB to your C: directory

       * Copy HandyIcons into Sys:System or somewhere (hopefully)

       * Edit your startup-sequence and place HandyWB after LoadWB

Even though I can't permit multiple instances of HandyIcons
running concurrently, there's nothing preventing you from making multiple
disk copies, each with its' own Tool Types list. Perhaps "HandyIcons-DP"
for you desktop publishing environment or "HandyIcons-PRO" for programmimg.
When starting these copies using HandyWB there is one naming
restriction. The first ten characters must be "HandyIcons" and case IS
significant.

NewZAP
Program and Documentation (c) 1986,1988 Proprietary Products
By John Hodgson
-------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS NEWZAP?
NewZAP is a multi-purpose file sector editing utility. If you've ever
had the need to alter just a few bytes within a file, examine its binary and
ASCII representations, or search for key sequences of digits or characters,
NewZAP will make your hacking life a little bit easier. It does what text
editors were not meant to do: precise position-oriented object modifications.
NewZAP will run from CLI or Workbench under 1.1 or 1.2 KickStart with or
without FAST RAM.

ORIGINS AND CREDITS
NewZAP is a third-generation ZAP utility in the sense that it descended
from Apparat's Z-80 based SuperZap to FileZAP (Fred Fish disk # 10) to the
current. NewZAP was compiled under 16-bit Aztec "C", with graphics, fontwork
and debugging assisted by with Deluxe Paint, FontEdit, and MetaScope,
respectively. Thanks to Scott Saunders for the competitive edge, Mike Lehman
for the much-needed documentation, and to R.J. Mical for "A Final Note on
Style".
Beverages provided by the Coca-Cola Company and Molson Breweries of
Canada, Ltd.

USAGE
The calling sequence from CLI is NewZAP [filename], where filename is
the optional initial file to edit. From Workbench, just click on the gadget.
The rest of the program is... well, self-explanatory! The current file can
be changed at any time by editing the filename string gadget, writing out
any changes to the previous file before switching. Simply click on the HEX
or ASCII windows to reflect the current editing mode. The cursor can be
moved by rolling the mouse with the left button down, or by using the arrow
keys. Note that each window wraps to the next; i.e., you can click on the
HEX window, move the cursor over the the ASCII side, and edit the ASCII
position while still in HEX mode.
As in FileZAP, you cannot edit past the EOF byte in the last record.
Unlike FileZAP, NewZAP displays and edits full 512-byte sectors via a
106-character wide internal font. Most commands are duplicated with
matching command sequences; an exception being the HELP key, which brings up
the "About..." menu item. Input/disk errors are flagged with a non-abusive
audible "beep".
The Search menu is unique to NewZAP. Use it to check for strings or
HEX digits, forward or backward, with or without caps matching. Tired of
batch files that grind your disk drive? Use NewZAP's Search, Edit and Save
functions to modify both instances of ":T" to "T:" in C:EXECUTE. Execute
will henceforth store its preprocessed batch files anywhere you want,
provided you have ASSIGNed T: to some place! I recommend ASSIGNing T: to
RAM: in your Startup-Sequence for ultra-fast EXECUTEs.

CAVEATS
Some folk have requested the ability to extend files. Well, the
original didn't support it, so neither does NewZAP. I've rarely had a need
for this, but perhaps future versions will support it if the demand is
great.
NewZAP expects an 80-column environment for its titles and gadgets. If
you haven't set Preferences yet, do so!
NewZAP is a two-edged sword, and can destroy object files with careless
editing. My advice: Work on backup copies.

SHAREWARE
Last, NewZAP is shareware, a concept where authors can release high-
quality software at low cost and risk to users. If you like it, contribute
something to the kitty. If you don't, pass it on. A $15 donation will put
you on the upgrade list, so you can receive the next major revision on disk
via U.S. Postal service. Encourage user-supported software! The author can be

SysCheck Jim Butterfield
Checks your boot disk, libraries 22-Aug-88

So there's a new operating system, Workbench 1.3, and you want
to bring some of your working programs into the new system.

So you run through the docs, copying in the updated commands,
libraries and what-have-you. It's a dirty job, but somebody's
got to do it. Which commands and other files need updating?
Can't do a straight backup or global copy ... to make room on
working disks, you've had to slice out the unwanted stuff ...
maybe fonts, or the voice-related stuff (narrator, translator).

To help matters along, there are new commands, libraries and
stuff (such as FF, or NEWCON-HANDLER) that you need to add.

SYSCHECK doesn't help you a bit with this dreary job. But it
might help you check .. to review whether everything is up to
date, and that the things you left off are MEANT to be left off.

SYSCHECK looks through your system libraries, and checks to see
if each item on its list of 96 files is either:

    --Right there and current version (Yay!!!);
    --Missing (OK, if that's what you intended);
--Not the "current" version (look out!).

Use CLI to call SYSCHECK. SysCheck is writ in Assembler, and
is pure (Pure what?) so you can make it resident and check four
disks at a time. If desired. Syntax: SysCheck ()

Examples: SysCheck scans current directory
           SysCheck DF0: scans DF0:
           SysCheck RAM: ..huh?

..well, OK on that last one if you REALLY put your
system in RAM: .. but mostly folks would get a lot of MISSING
messages on that one.

And of course, you could use DF1: or hard disk or whatever
your finanaces or fairy godmother have provided.

Output goes to the screen. Use redirection if you want it to go
elsewhere, e.g.:
          SysCheck >ram:SCFile df1:
You get two reports .. one, as it's going through
the files (alphabetic order, more or less). This part goes to a
CON: screen, and won't be redirected. Then you'll get the results:
separate lists of the three categories.

Let's look at the three possibilities:
--Right there and current version (Yay!!!). The file matches
the one the program knows.  It could be a brand new 1.3 version;
it might be unchanged since 1.0 (not too many of those around).
In any case, it's up to date as far as SYSCHECK is concerned.
--Missing (OK, if that's what you intended). Everybody strips
away the files they don't plan to use. If you know why this file
is missing, rest easy. If you missed it due to an oversight, copy
it over. If it's "new for 1.3", decide if you need it.
--Not the "current" version (look out!). Maybe it's an old
version, and you should have updated it. Maybe it's so brand-new
that this program hasn't heard about it. Or.. it could be a
"poisoned" file. Do you know where your disk has been?

Uses of SYSCHECK:
--checking that a system you've just updated to 1.3 is OK.
--examining a 1.2 disk, not because you care, but because you're
curious as to what has changed.
--looking at a "foreign" disk - one you've just received from
someone else - to see if the libraries are up to date.
--examining new Commodore releases to see if they have slipped
in any changes, and where.

What is Checked:
Almost everything in the C directory. Most of L and LIBS, and
some items from SYSTEM and UTILITIES.

What is Not Checked:
Things that are often customized, such as FONTS, DEVS and S
scripts. I'm leaving PREFERENCES alone, too, together with the
SYSTEM-CONFIGURATION file. No point in getting Change messages
when changes will be commonplace and unimportant.
Watch the "version" title. Commodore may change things, and the
new versions won't be recognized until SysCheck is updated.
SYSCHECK does not examine the boot block area.

Computer Vandalism?
Hopefully, you know now about nerds who vandalize computers
with viruses (virii?) and other horrors. And you know to use
utilties such as VCheck1.9 to check whether your disks have been
subjected to such brainless damage. Such damage takes place in
the "boot block".  SYSCHECK will not spot any changes there;
use a good virus checker.
Seems to me that the next attack of the mutants could be by
changing the CLI commands or the libraries. It would not take
much brains - only a level of sociopathy - to replace, say, the
DIR command with a "sport" that will delete every tenth file,
and that will copy itself into any new C directory it finds.
In spotting changes in the system directories, SYSCHECK will
help guard against such practices. They would be nasty enough
on floppies .. but a hard disk system could be seriously harmed
by such file-fiddling.
DO look through files such as your S/Startup-Sequence to make
sure you know what all the commands in there are supposed to be
doing. It would be possible for one of the great Brain-Damaged
to slip something nasty in there.

On the Brighter Side...
SYSCHECK is not intended primarily as a doomsday-detector.
It is there mostly to help you keep things up to date...
...until SYSCHECK itself goes out of date by being succeeded by
revised libraries.

The 1.3 Update...
So you've gotten the 1.3 system, and are ready to bring your
software into the current generation. Good for you. The following
descriptions use the new 1.3 commands, and assume drive DF1:
contains the disk you're checking. Best to boot up
on Workbench 1.3 (a backup, please!), and then command:
RESIDENT C:INSTALL (and ...C:INFO and ...C:COPY and ...C:DIR and
even ...SysCheck/SysCheck).
Test your working disk, the one you're about to upgrade, with
INSTALL DF0: CHECK. A report of a "non-standard boot" indicates
that it's either copy-protected or has acquired a virus; ask for
help on these. Otherwise, make a backup of this disk. Now run a
directory of this disk. Use INFO to see how full the disk is.
Many commercial disks are jammed full, and the new 1.3 files will
often be bigger than the old ones. You could run out of space
on the upgraded disk; plan for this possibility.

Run SYSCHECK and update anything marked NOT CURRENT VERSION.
Use the CLONE feature of COPY (new for 1.3) when you do this.
If the disk is nearly full, think of what might be removed:
for example, if this program group doesn't speak, you won't need
LIBS:TRANSLATOR.LIBRARY or L:SPEAK-HANDLER. If you don't use
fonts, you may be able to junk that whole library, along with
LIBS:DISKFONT.LIBRARY. Go through the DEVS:PRINTERS libraries
and throw out the printer drivers you don't use (important: be
sure to update the ones you DO use from the 1.3 disk).

Another run of SYSCHECK will show all files current, but some
MISSING. Here's where you have to make hard system decisions.
If you use CLI, be sure to add L:NEWCON-HANDLER and L:SHELL-SEG,
along with C:NEWSHELL and S:SHELL-STARTUP. While we're in S:
let's look at the Startup-Sequence: as a minimum, you should
add the new 1.3 title to your existing file. Snoop the new
Startup-Sequence file for thoughts on further updates; you'll
see that this file has split into two (the second called StartupII).
Use what seems sensible.

VirusX 3.1 Release Note:

The reason for V3.1 of VirusX is because I got 2 new viruses since
the V3.0 release.

The reason for V3.0 of VirusX is to deal with the first non-bootblock
Virus, the IRQ Virus.

VirusX will find this disk on any disk inserted, and remove it, just
like it does with the bootblock viruses. The difference is that
the IRQ Virus can find it's way onto your hard drive.

Rather than increasing the size of VirusX by a fair amount to have it
handle Hard Disks, there is a separate utility called KV that will
allow you to check your hard disk for this virus.

What you should do is check the C: directory of your hard disk,
and once you've done that, take a look at your startup-sequence.
Use KV to check the first file found in your startup sequence -
if the first line of your SS is "System/SetMap USA0" or something
like that, then KV System/SetMap to make sure the SetMap command
isn't infected.

If worse comes to worst, run VirusX first, then run KV on every
directory on your hard drive where executable programs live. Once
you've gotten rid of it once, if you make sure you check any new
programs carefully (with KV, or by having VirusX running when you
test these programs), you're safe.

Note that all this applies ONLY to the IRQ Virus V41. If you see
any other incarnation of this same virus, Please send me a copy!

ALSO NOTE: This release of VirusX is 11948 Bytes. If it is any
bigger than this, it could be because VirusX itself is infected with
this new IRQ virus - run the KV program on VirusX ('KV VIRUSX') just
to make sure.

         ...Steve

KV - KillVirus 1/1/89

KV will detect the IRQ Ver 41.0 virus in an executable file and
remove the virus from the file.

Usage: KV filename

Wildcards (unix `*') maybe used in `filename' to allow searching entire
directories -- for instance KV C:* will scan every file in the C:
    directory.

Be aware that the IRQ virus attacks the file C:dir as well as the
first executable file that it finds listed in your startup-sequence
files. It is to your advantage to check all your disks startup files
and the first executable file referenced once infected with the IRQ
    virus.

Feel free to borrow this code and make millions of dollars from its
sale or commercial use, but please give credit where credit is due.

Synopsis:

Features adaptive columnar listing, versatile sort options,
UNIX-style pattern matching, recursive subdirectory listing, etc!

Usage:
	ls [options] [path1] [path2] ...

Options:
	-?	Help!
-c	Show file comment info, -c implies -l
	-d	Show directory names only
	-f	Show filenames only
-l Long verbose listing showing filesizes and dates
-n	No sort, just spit them out in the order ExNext() returns
	-r	Reverse sort direction
-s	Sorted by size smallest to largest
-t	Sorted by date oldest to newest
	-R	Recursive descent of subdirectories

All arguments are optional. Default is to give short columnar listing,
sorted alphabetically, using the current directory. Alphabetizing is case
insensitive.

Patterns may be matched in the given names, using the UNIX-style '*'
to wildcard any number of characters, and '?' to wildcard a single
character. If you need to specify a pathname with spaces in it like
"Wombat Soup", you need to put quotes around it. LS can process up to 30
separate pathname patterns in one command line.

Known Bugs:

Redirecting the shortlist output to PRT: gives undesirable results,
since I am using relative cursor positioning commands to format the
screen output. I thought about using an array to store a virtual
screen, but my primary goals were to keep the size down and display
speed at a maxiumum. Also, LS cannot pattern match devices (like "dh*:")
or support multiple levels of pattern matching (like "dh0:?/L*.info").
This would involve another level of recursion and groking the Device List.

Changes From 1.0 to 2.0:

o Source code prototyped, linted, traced, optimized, tweaked, etc.
o Made resident ("pseudo-pure") by linking with cres.o from LC 5.0.
 o High-volume routines recoded in assembly (lssup.a).
o Now handles multiple paths/files on a command line, up to 30.
o New sort flags, including no sort.
o Enhanced wildcards, understands complex *.?*.* expressions now.
o More efficient ExNext() performance, less ram used for recursion.
o SIGBREAKF_CTRL_C signal (Ctrl-C) cleanly aborts at any point now.
o Command line parser handles quoted pathnames now (LC 5.0 benefit).
o Short listing finally auto-adjusts to new console window sizes!
o Pen color escape codes bypassed when redirecting long output.
o Sorting by size or date is also subsorted alphabetically now.
o Long listing shows new 1.3 file attributes, plus comment indicator.
o File dates are now in international format, YY-MM-DD.
o Fixed listings with files datestamped after 99-12-31 (overflow).
o Fixed listings with files datestamped before 78-01-01 (time < 0).

Changes From 2.0 to 2.1

o Fixed the show comment feature, a last minute bug in 2.0.
o Fixed the "Unknown option ''" message problem.
o Optimized the assembly branches, reduced code size another few bytes.

Changes From 2.1 to 2.2

 o Fixed erroneous Status returns.
o Fixed bug with multiple wildcarded pathnames.
o Compiled with LC 5.0 Patch 3 and CAPE 2.0, saved another 46 bytes.
o Eliminated an extra stpcpy(), saved another few bytes.

Don't send me money for this one! Its a Christmas present 8-)
However, if you find any bugs or have any comments I'd like to hear about them!
