Thanks for this awesome guide! I do have a question though: I've got an Amiga 2000 with an X-Surf ethernet board, along with Workbench 1.3 installed onto a microSD card (via a SCSI2SD board). I'd love to be able to use the X-Surf but as of now I'm unclear if it's even possible with Workbench 1.3, or if I should stick to serial connections (like with my Wifi232 module). Any suggestions or tips?

@Huxley I could be wrong, but I think you're better off using your WiFi rather than X-Surf to hop onto BBSes, if you're picking between those two options. To simply get on a BBS, trying to put an entire TCP/IP stack in place is almost overkill IMO. I think you'd need Roadshow if you did go the X-Surf route.

Your WiFi modem or Shot's excellent guide should get you there with far less hassle.

What @intric8 said!

If your main use is for BBSing then for sure a WiFi Modem is the best choice, IMHO. Most terminals were made with serial connections/modems in mind so you have a lot of choices for software as the WiFi modems are modem emulators.

I don't know what terminals would support the ethernet device. I have one for my 1200 and an X-surf 500 to plug into my ACA500+ but I have not installed it yet.

I had looked into TCP/IP stacks several times in the past. To my knowledge there has never been one that supported Workbench 1.3 - This is partly what took me so long to figure this stuff out. Everyone else had been pointing to things like that in order to get "online"... Well, their version of online was via the World Wide Web, they were all using Workbench 2 or above, and most used TCP/IP stacks. I mean I recall having a little fun in the early 2000's using IBrowse via WinUAE in a 3.1 setup, but fun with http on an Amiga today is not what I would call worth my time. Of course this could be achieved on machines such as the 500 or 2000, but Workbench 2 or above would be needed.

I had, and continue to have more fun with the BBS'ing, which has plenty of terminals that work under 1.3, and gives you an authentic 80's/90's experience. For that, something that emulates a modem would surely be best. Personally I'm still interested in the stacks for the Amiga in my 2.04 partition, as I know there are some ICQ type programs that support that there.

In their love for all things Amiga I feel people often forget about their high school sweetheart in favor of the upgraded blond bombshell... But love is not only an attraction, it is a choice. My enjoyment is in finding all the new and fantastic things I can do with my first crush there. I've done the 1200 thing via emulation... I had it browsing the world wide web, I had this high resolution picture of the Enterprise as a wallpaper... Not saying it can't be fun, but I will say loudly there's a lot more fun to be had on the good old 500 than most people realize. They don't even need to upgrade the kickstart. I've got MagicWB on mine, which is not even supported, but can be done. I love finding new and impressive ways to be more of a power user on that thing... Because as nice as the blond bombshell might be, at the time she was introduced there were more impressive models coming from the PC world... When introduced the Amiga blew everything away, and that very same model was still blowing off socks into the mid 90's because of what she could do with what she had. Older but damn impressive. Everyone can flock to the newer Amiga's because of ease or because they do more, but "impressive" they never were. Now if I had a 1200 I'm sure I'd get some use out of it, but it's the 500 I love, and it's the 500 I "choose".

:D
Great guide and thought into walking a novice through ATalk... This particular post sticks out to me also relative to the "high school sweetheart" vs "upgrade".. Since I have gotten back into vintage computing going on I am thinking 15 years now (wow time going fast) I have gone through several phases if you will.. I have a 1200 upgraded with various modern upgrades, flat screen tv etc., Vampired A500 (speaks for itself) and other such.. Now after all this time I find those sitting in boxes on the shelf and I am back where I started with the 500. Why.. Well long story but short version is my friend in High School had one (we couldnt afford a computer in house) and I spent so much time his house on that thing. I mean really I learned computers on that 500. The one I have now is far upgraded over that original one but MOSTLY period correct upgrades ex: A590 hard drive etc. Anyway I wanted to mention that after all this time I have found I want to go back to pure period old stuff. Good ol CRT 1084 monitor with WB 1.3. I also dont want to forget a mention on the 1000 as my OTHER friend had one of those at that time but I didnt spend as much time on that one but it was still and Amiga and a blast...

Wow, this topic takes me back, thanks!

A buddy and I ran a BBS, and I'm trying to remember what hosting software we used. That would be a total blast to resurrect another one someday. But, I'm not having much luck searching the interwebs and locating any BBS hosting software.

Anyone have any suggestions, location of archives, etc.?
