Yes, you do have to use the two together, in the appropriate computer. I was mistaken earlier in my response, however. The DMAC chip is not present on the A4000(D) because it has no onboard SCSI controller, while the A3000 (D & T) do. DMAC controls part of SCSI on the 3000 series computers. It is also present in the A4000T variant, since it has onboard SCSI.

The SCSI controller in the 4000T is a completely different design compared to the A3000's one. There is no SDMAC in the A4000T.

Indeed it is.

DMAC (390563) is IIRC only found in A570, A590 and A2091.

SuperDMAC (390537) is in A3000 and A3000T only.

The A4000T has an NCR SCSI controller chip.

I'd love to create something like this. I've got the workshop and the skills, but the cost of the proprietary components just makes it cost prohibitive.
