Amiga 1000 boot problem

Hi all, was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I recently got an Amiga 1000 that came with a non original kickstart 1.2 and wb 1.2 disks. All worked perfectly. I got aca500plus, which also works fine. I disassembled everything to clean and retrobright and reassembled. The aca500 works perfectly, and I can read floppy disks from df0 in workbench. When I remove the aca500 and try to boot, I get the kickstart prompt but my kick start disk does not seem to be recognized. The drive spins up when I put the disk in, but never makes the healthy reading the disk noises I usually get when booting Kickstart. System stays at the kickstart prompt. I can't seem to read the kickstart disk in workbench... not sure if that is normal? I don't have another Kickstart disk to test with.
So currently I'm kinda stuck...not sure if I damaged the kickstart disk somehow or if my df0 is a little off. I do have working 1010, but as far as I can tell, a1000 only looks for kickstart in df0?

Thanks!

The ACA500 _Plus_ also features a boot drive switcher.

So you could switch df0: and df1: and put the ACA into ‚cloaking‘ mode.

So you're saying that before you started using the ACA500, the KS and WB disks worked. But after installing and using the ACA500 (where everything also worked) then removing the ACA500 the Kickstarter disk now doesn't work?

Is that what you're saying?

It sounds to me like the Kickstarter disk is probably borked. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if that floppy drive is full of dust and some got chewed into the disk during a read.

FWIW, if you load up to Workbench and put a Kickstarter disk in, one of two things should happen.

In a best case scenario, the disk would be read and mounted onto your Workbench with a disk label of "KICK" below it.

In a worst case scenario, the disk would be read, fail, and say "DF0:BAD" as its label.

Are you saying that yours doesn't even mount a disk image of any kind on the Workbench when the ACA500 is not connected?

I did not realise you could do that in cloaking mode - will give it a try, thanks!

I'm getting a DF0:???? When i put in the kickstart disk. I think you're right, the kickstart disk must be messed up, the other disks I have work fine - I even wrote some adf's to floppies just to test.

Any ideas where I can get a working kickstart adf? My Amiga Forever 2016 has the A1000 boot rom, , but i don't see a kickstart ADF.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the help fellows!
I managed to write a kickstart image, which reads in at the kickstart prompt.
I now get a turquoise screen when I expect to see the WB prompt, and the system reboots.
Looking this up, it seems to be an error with the WCS?
It worked fine before I took everythign apart, I'm wondering if I plugged it back in wrong, or if one of the chips went bad.
Is there a diagnostic program I can run to to test the WCS? I can boot into workbench fine using the ACA500plus.

Ta!

You could try to use a DiagROM via the ACA.

Could be, however, that once the ACA takes over the Kickstarter that from that point on the DiagROM doesn’t find anything.

It’s worth trying, i would say.

Be aware that there is an A1000 version of the DiagROM. Could be that you cant use that as it is meant to be out into two EPROMs in the original a1000 and not used as one file. Could try with the A500 one.

It was a bit of an adventure, but I got the problem resolved.
So i loaded DiagRom, which is pretty cool, but it doesn't check the WCS. There is an A1000 specific version, but I haven't managed to figure out how to use it yet.
Anyway, I opened the machine again and removed the WCS, then reinstalled, making sure everything was connected properly. Tried booting, and still no luck. Same problem.
On a hunch, I downloaded a bunch of kickstart adf images, and tried with v1.1 NTSC...and it works!
Wrote the freshly downloaded 1.3, and it works too! Yay!!
So it looks like my problem was either a corrupted or incorrect kickstart ADF..sigh.
In retrospect, I should have tried that first!

Thanks again for all the help, much appreciated!
