3.1.4 effectively is a drop-in replacement for a 3.1 ROM.

In situations where you have some libs or similar loaded in the startup-sequence with loadmodule you might get an error. Or maybe if you patch scsi.device of 3.1. Other than that you get instant support for large drives etc.
Doesn't 3.1.4 exclude workbench.library from the ROM? You won't be booting far if you didn't already have that on a hard drive or aren't booting from the 3.1.4 Install disk.

3.1 excluded it.

... for A4000 afair.

I had 3.1.4 and it was a drop-in replacement. On a flash chip, though, so I didn’t literally exchange it. Just the ROM image.

I can only highly recommend getting an A500flash or similar.

Thanks for posting that oldbull, BloodyCactus must have been correct. The machine models are for data collection, nothing more (once you've entered the correct order page).

So what happened to 3.1.1 - 3.1.3? It seems that 3.1- was not released by Commodore but by Amiga Technologies as 3.1 was still in development when C= went BK.

The naming here is probably the oldest nerd-joke ever. Hint: the next version will be 3.1.4.1. If there is ever a revision required it will be 3.1.4.1.5.

This seems like a good enough place to ask a related question that, strangely, I have not found an answer for on Hyperion's site-- Can I install my OS 3.1.4 on more than one Amiga?

I purchased my physical ROM and floppy set for an A2000. Since I registered my Kickstart ROM on Hyperion's site, I only have access to download the Modules disk for an A500/A600/A2000.

When I attempted a test install under WinUAE (emulating an A1200 w/ kickstart 3.1.4 ROM), it asks for the Modules disk for an A1200. Of course, I do not have this. Truth be told, I do not even know what the Modules disk is for.

Could I alter my test install to ask for my A2000 modules disk instead, just to complete the install or would my A1200 WinUAE system now be messed up because I supplied the wrong disk?

What's the point of all this? Well, I want to see how the OS performs under WinUAE A1200 emulation before purchasing a ROM kit for that model.

The A500/A600/A2000 share the same ROM with the exception that v2.05+ delivered with the A600 also supported Gayle’s IDE vía scsi.device. v3.1+ supported it it even if unused on A500/A2000 too.

The A1200 and A4000 share similar, but not 100% compatible 3.0+ roms, enough of a distinction to require specific versions for each (A4000 has problems with IDE if you use the A1200 ROM among other issues.)

Why does this matter? Because the MODULES disk exists *only for those that want to run 3.1.4 with a Kickstart 3.1 ROM.*. If you had the correct 3.1.4 ROM installed, that disk would never be required / touched at all. Otherwise the disk with the modules specific to your “group of machines” is needed to “patch” what you’ve booted.

In your situation, you need to procure the 3.1.4 ROM for the A1200. You could then reuse the same 3.1.4 disk that came with your A500/A2000 set.

Yes, they should have bundled them... but they chose to milk that cow.

I think I get it. The 3.1.4 software ROM I used for my WinUAE test install is not for the correct model.

Thanks for the summary.
Couldn’t have worded that better.
